W0C 10-10-10 - What about next year?

Bob K0NR

Here's a question for the Colorado SOTA community. We saw a nice increase in activity during the 10-10-10 event (tied to the Colorado 14er Event) in August.
As someone said, "activity breeds activity," especially if you are interested in S2S opportunities. I will argue that there is a benefit to having a specific set of days (from time to time) to promote SOTA activity.
If you go back in time (pre-SOTA), the Colorado 14er Event was created with this in mind: "hey, let's all operate from the summits on the same day!"

So what do to next year? I think a 10 day event is too much for an annual event. It would likely just burn us out. But maybe we could expand the 14er event a bit. (Remember, it's not just 14ers, it is a SOTA event.) I know there is some sentiment of NOT doing the 14er event on the weekends because of crowded trails and crowded highways.

So here's a thought: what if we added "bonus days" around the 14er event? Maybe Thursday and Friday before the normal Sat/Sun? Or it could be Friday and Monday, to straddle the event. Or it could be more days, even a whole week. In past years, some of us have already added on activation days around the 14er event, so this would just formalize that idea.

What do y'all think?
Any other ideas to toss into the mix?

If you participated (Activator and/or Chaser) in the WØC-SOTA 10-10-10 Event/Challenge and you met the challenge... you can get a certificate, designed by Steve/wGØAT (thanks Steve), by sending a request to Jim/NØIPA (see QRZ.com for his email address).

1) We are still waiting for missing logs to crunch the numbers. Activators, please send in your logs if you activated a WØC summit above 10000 ft. between August 7th - August 16th.

2) Steve/wGØAT is donating an unstructured base ball cap with collector’s item rare embroidered patch of SOTA petroglyph mtn goat design (see picture, color may vary). These will be awarded to the #4 in each category. As a reminder, the top 3 in each category will receive a personalized and autographed print from Photographer Dan/NØOLD. Check out his Colorful Colorado collection.

Bob - If you get this please forward to Matt - seems my computer doesn't likeMatt's addredd - Thanks  Al N1SMB
Matt - Below will be the 3 logs for this event, I really didn't take up the challenge, mostly to help others.  Thanks for your huge effort you & the others put forth to make this a very positive event.  Not very computer literate so I hope this is what you need, if not respond & will do my best to get the info right.

I've heard back from most of the SOTA ops who were out for the Pacific Northwest Not-Quite-Fourteener event on August 7th and 8th.  Almost everyone went out on the first day of the event.  Here's some of the data shared:

- On Saturday, there were fifteen SOTA operators on summits in Washington and Oregon. There was at least one SOTA op out on Sunday.
- Eleven posted alerts on SOTAWatch and included PNW NQF in the alert comment.
- QSOs:  341
- S2S QSOs: 179

From the data I received, it looks like the average S2S QSO was six points and at least half of the S2S contacts were out-of-state. As expected, our local ops enjoyed all the making S2S contacts with all the ops doing ten point summits in CA, AZ, and CO!  In addition to Washington and Oregon, S2S contacts were made with Nevada, Wyoming, California, Colorado, Arizona, Idaho, and British Columbia.  Pretty much everyone had a good day out.

I think we can declare the first annual PNW NFQ a success.  Thanks to all of the activators out on summits, all the chasers, and everyone who responded to my email asking for feedback and data.

Indeed I was still on the summit, I logged you as a S2S as well. Glad to make the contact!

Great pics Matt! I enjoy finding those old benchmarks.

I think I worked you around 10:51am on Mount Antero. Were you still on the summit? I logged you as a S2S and can delete that entry if not correct. I enjoyed our QSO either way.

Best,

Eric / KF0AUK

Had a great day running up Boot Mountain (W0C-LG-0018) with the family this past Saturday for the 14er Event. We got up early and rode a side by side and ATV to a saddle just below the summit and hoofed it the rest of the way to the top. We holed up behind an antenna installation on top to stay out of the wind and fired up a stove for some fresh coffee and had some bagels for breakfast. I jumped right on my yagi just after 9am and started listening/making calls and quickly made a few S2S contacts with stations on Uncompahgre (W0ADV), Mt. Evans (KM4PEH), Kaufman Ridge (KX0R, W7UM), Pikes Peak (K0NR), and Snowmass (N0EDE). Smoky day overall but great weather and fun to get out. Attached a couple photos.

Cheers!

The first annual Pacific Northwest Not-Quite-Fourteener was a success... we had thirteen SOTA ops on summits on Saturday and along with a bunch of local contacts, lots of S2S QSOs with California, Nevada, Colorado, and Arizona operators were made. Thanks to everyone who made a contact with any of us up here in two-point-peak land.  :)  I will send out a note when I have finished compiling data on QSOs, S2S, and points earned but if the feedback from others and my log is any indication (38 contacts, 20 S2S, 109 S2S points in about two hours), everyone had a pretty good day.

And yes, we will be out there again next year!

Wow - that’s a great report!

So glad to hear activity on that band.  The distance plus the 14er elevations make it that much more fun!

Thanks for sharing - we are lucky to have access to these great mountains -

David/W0ADV activated both Redcloud Peak (W0C/RG-002) and Sunshine Peak (W0C/RG-004), two 14ers in the San Juan mountains.
Joyce/K0JJW and I worked David on both summits from Mt Evans (W0C/FR-003)
I heard Randy/K5RHD work David on Sunshine Peak, not sure if they worked on Redcloud.

Mt Evans (DM79eo) to Sunshine Peak (DM67gw) or Redcloud Peak (DM67gw)
   244 km (152.6 miles)

Pikes Peak (DM78lu) to Sunshine Peak (DM67gw) or Redcloud Peak (DM67gw)
   234 km (146.2 miles)

Note that I am using the 6-character maidenhead position to do the distance calculations. Sunshine and Redcloud are in the same grid so these calculations are the same for both.
A more precise calculation would have the distance to Sunshine a little bit higher.

The contact with Sunshine was very difficult for us...almost didn't make it. Redcloud was significantly stronger. I need to look at the topography to understand that better.
This is a new personal best for me and Joyce on 1.2 GHz SOTA.

Let's be clear: David did the hard work of climbing two 14ers in a day. Thanks!!!!

Skunked: 0/3 summits activated

Terry Carter

Greetings everyone!  I managed to activate zero summits this weekend...  I had planned to activate Dolores Peak, and possibly Middle Peak (SM-007 & SM-006) on Saturday, and Lone Cone (SM-012) on Sunday.  Friday night, I arrived at the Fish Creek trailhead later than I expected to, so I camped at the trailhead (which is to say, I slept in my truck).  I woke up at around 6.  I left at 7, thinking I had plenty of time to travel the 2 miles to the summit (with 3,000 elevation gain).  Unfortunately, there wasn't actually a trail to speak of, and I spent about 90 minutes trying to get through the swampy forest with so much deadfall.  At about the 90 minute mark, when I hadn't made it to treeline, I decided to go back to the truck and try a peak I know I can get to, Lone Cone.

Lone Cone is a peak that I have submitted before, and I know the route. On the way to that trailhead, I heard Eric KF0AUK on Antero on my truck radio. Looks like your J-pole worked great! Anyway, I made it over to the Lone Cone trailhead, and made the summit at 1PM.  Once I got there, I called CQ on both 146.58 and 146.52, but I got no response.  I used my rollup J-Pole attached to a hiking pole, and my arrow 2m yagi. I also identified on a local repeater to make sure that the signal was making it out. Since conditions at the summit were fairly pleasant, I was going to attempt to activate on HF, but when I went to set up, I found that I needed a male to male BNC adaptor that I had left in the truck.  SO, I took a short nap, then headed back down.

With the smoke, and so many other things going wrong for me that day, I decided to head back to Grand Junction and get a good night's sleep in my own bed.

Lesson learned for me: Choose summits where I know the route is established, because carrying and setting up radio equipment on a summit can be complicated enough. I have enjoyed myself in events in the past when I don't have to worry about how to get to the summit!  I'll save those route-finding and scouting trips for when I am not trying to meet a deadline to get to the summit.

Anyway, I hope that most had a successful weekend, and have fun with the 10-10-10.  Sadly, I won't have enough spare time to make it to any more summits this month.

73,
Terry (WB0RBA)

Submit Your Logs

Don't forget to:
a) submit your SOTA log to the SOTA database https://www.sotadata.org.uk/en/
b) email your log (csv format) to Jim/NØIPA,  N0IPA@... for tabulation of the 10-10-10 challenge

I find this software to be easy and efficient for entering SOTA logs:
