Thanks for the callsigns. Not sure on the arrow. Should have pulled it out at that 2nd site but I was ready to get down the mtn. Two other strange things occurred to me when I was trying at the peak register. The 1st was that the Kit Carson folks were full quieting even as I pointed away from them. But the apocryphal transistor and wet noodle would have closed that link, I could easily see straight to them. The other thing was the Pikes station AJO was telling them he was operating into a J-Pole. I could hear him well if I was pointing to him, but scratchy. However, if I turned the antenna horizontal, we was much improved. I don't get that as I thought a J Pole was vertical polarized omni- reflections or two in the path? I did try the stock duck antenna from the Peak too, but no difference between that and the arrow. Anyway, my current theory is there was some shadowing or Fresnel Zone going on with the peaks to the north, even though that doesn't make sense as they should be lower than Pikes at least. I haven't checked out the arrow since, but will do so. I do regularly use it to grab the DUV Telemetry from AO-85 which is much further away and a less than a watt cubesat, so I think it's working. Up top I even bypassed the diplexer and connected the HT via a quad shield shield microwave SMA cable to the arrow director with two connectors- SMA barrel from HT to cable, SMA to BNA at the arrow. Losses should have been negligible. Also, the packets from the peak did go through, showed digipeated via WD4IXD- nearly to Topaz Mtn in Hartsel and much further than Pikes. Radio is weird sometimes. 73s, -Vince

Re: KI6ASW Crestone Peak Log
Vince, We got a puzzler on this one. Pikes is only 68 miles from Crestone with no major obstructions, which should be easy-peasy on 2m fm between two 14ers. It doesn’t look like Humboldt is in the path and its 200 feet lower anyway. WD4IXD-12 is actually not that much further so it is significant that path worked.

I have not taken up the art of SOTA or 14 teener radio... I should but in this case my study from years ago when I lived in the Valley tells me that your signals were being bounced by the Lost Gold ledge or maybe some other of the "huge" deposits said to exist in that area.. numerous lost gold mine stories abound for those peaks and the further confusion of signals by the spanish caves, and other artifacts could have cause your signals to be "wierdly" bounced around... I follow the adventures of you Mountaineers with wonder and should gte busy with the chase but never seem to be around when your out... WD0AJG

Re: KI6ASW Crestone Peak Log

Yeah, you're telling me! It was quite frustrating actually, and I don't disagree- it should have worked. Even a lousy antenna (I tried with the rubber ducky) with 7W should have closed link- and throughout I I could receive them, though only occasionally enough to break squelch. I worked Pikes from Humboldt and Lindsay in the past and they were 5/9, but that was with the Yeasu. Not ruling out operator error- seems most likely- but all can tell you that's how it happened and it's pretty hard to mess up with the rubber ducky so I don't know what I could have done wrong. I'd think the finals on the radio to be the next suspect, but the AX-25 packets made it to Hartsel from that location. The KC Folks could actually hear me calling to Pikes- they relayed I was there and I heard Pikes reply to them that he had tried to talk with me- of course I called back hearing that, still no luck. I can't figure it out. I do have a photo toward Pikes. Usually you can see it from the Sangres. In this case there are clouds above and the visibility wasn't such to make it out, but could see well toward Canon City. Google is so cool that I am able to recreate the photo and there's a clear difference in views. Unless I did the trig wrong, there's another ~.5 mi or so drop due to the curvature of the Earth at 67.1 miles. All of which would have made the look angle like ~.5 degree below horizontal, but there was absolutely nothing that high in the way in that direction. Humboldt is too far to the side. Given the strange atmospheric conditions and the polarization reversal, my total wag is a reflection off of the clouds- like a Tropo E inversion without the ducting, with nothing to scatter and loose coherence from otherwise, setting up a nice little 2nd path and Fresnel zone- which really doesn't pass Occam's Razor nor does that make much since in that the polarization difference would mean the two paths would be out of phase anyway. But I can't figure out anything else, it just should have worked. When Belford worked it was from that 2nd location. Pike's either had called it a day or still couldn't hear me at at time. Had I been thinking I would have tried 70 cm too. Going to feed the radio into an RTL-SDR just to make sure it's pulling out 7W still. 73, -Vince

14er event last Sunday, Mt. Belford
Gerry Paschal
Finally got time to post a comment to the group. Our small band did summit Mt. Belford last Sunday. We hiked to treeline late Saturday and camped. Had several episodes of hail and rain thru the evening, making it quite miserable. Stars did peek out around 02:00 and that was fabulous to view. Sunday morning there was much thunder and sleet and we just about called it off, but it did appear to clear out some around 08:30 and quite a few locals were headed on up, so we followed. We did summit around 10:00. We made 5 contacts on 2 meters before losing my antenna to wind gust. Wind was fierce!! Gary W5ODS did make around 20 contacts on HF. We called it off at 11:00 and headed back down, thru several hail episodes and fierce wind gusts. This was by far the most challenging of any of the 14er's that we have done. 73 Gerry KC5JKU

Re: 14er event last Sunday, Mt. Belford
Gary Burch
Hi Group, I see Jerry, KC5JKU, my fearless leader, just posted also
about our Mt. Belford adventure. The first rain event started just as we reached treeline Saturday afternoon. We quickly set up our tent and waited a few minutes for it to subside. Jerry proceeded to get a campfire going and I thought, "OK, that was our 10% rain forecast, now for the stars and a pleasant evening." As Jerry said, the star report at 2am was encouraging only to be dampened by the sound of rain on our tent at 4am. My son Dan, N9JHZ, joined me on my and his first 14er hike. Starting the hike we discovered the weather pattern was dark clouds, rain, sleet, hail, clear skies and then repeat. We made it to the top and I made 2 contacts on 2 meters with KX0R and KI6ASW with my FT-60 and a rubber duck antenna. I then jumped down to HF to work some SOTA chasers on 40, 30 and 20 meters. At the Summit it was clear but the wind was strong and cold so my CW was getting worse as time went on. I was able to make 37 SOTA contacts before we decided to pack it up and head down. I was quickly reminded that "down" could be more difficult than "up", so began the slow (like turtle slow) descent for me. We were all happy to have achieved the 14er Summit and had a great weekend together. 73 Gary W5ODS

W0C-SP-076, unnamed peak activation 8/25
Barrett Poe
Folks, I am camping overnight this evening with some coworkers and I thought I might as well bag a peak while I'm in the area. I am opting for an unnamed peak just east of My Antero. I'll be packing my 2m/70cm HT with a half wave, and I'll bring the Yagi just in case. Barrett W0ASB

Do you think there’s a path to Akron from there. I can’t remember if the FT-90 is still in the Mini, or if I have a cigarette plug to power it. I haven’t gotten Powerpoles installed yet...

but if you might be up there past 11:30 and have a path, I will see if I can get the radio hooked up at lunch time. I will be at the airport full day today.

Activating Longs Peak this weekend
ke0btx
Hello All, I just put in the alert on the SOTA site, just letting people know I will be attempting a SOTA activation of Longs Peak (W0C/FR-110 on 146.52-FM) this Sunday 9/16. Very tentative ETA is around 9 am, but I really don't know how long it will take with our group. I will send out a spot if I have cell phone service when on the summit and ready to go. Thanks, Kris KE0BTX
