Colorado 14er Event, Summer 2018, Mt. Yale

Gerry Paschal

Hi Ham14er Folks.  Greetings from the flatlands.  This year we plan to ascend and work from Mt. Yale.  Last year in the 14er Event we enjoyed making contacts from Humboldt Peak.  We have been monitoring the posts of  reports of injuries and fatalities among climbers, and it truly is heartbreaking and sobering, so we all obviously have to keep that in mind.  Still, we look forward to the challenge.  Hope everyone has a pleasant Spring.

For the January VHF contest, we've got a group of hams doing a combination VHF Contest + Summits On The Air activation. We will hike up Mt Herman (DM79mb) on Saturday, be on the air around noon and last as long as temperature permits (probably 3 or 4 pm).

We will have 4 operators on 2m FM and 70cm FM, operating Single Op Portable for the contest (K0NR, K0JJW, W0ASB, W0YSD).
You can work all of us, most likely on the calling frequencies of 146.52 and 446.0 MHz.

In addition, I am taking the FT-817 with a halfwave antenna for 6m, small yagi's for 2m and 70cm, so I'll be able to work ssb and cw on those bands.
I'll also have FM on 222 MHz and 1.2 GHz, with small yagi antennas. _I'd really like to make some QSOs on 1.2 GHz_.

In summary, look for us on:

146.52, 446.00 MHz FM
223.5, 1294.5 MHz FM

50.125 SSB
144.200 SSB
432.100 SSB

Text me at 719 659-3727 for a sked

Mt Herman is W0C/FR-063 for Summits On The Air

Congrats on topping out on Capitol Jim...and safely returning!  I've thought about those five climbers on my last activations and it helped reinforce being careful about taking a different descent path that could cliff-out and/or end up on steep dangerous loose rock.

Kris,
Congrats on the two activations.

You probably heard an EchoLink (or similar) node on 147.42 MHz. People usually set them up on random simplex frequencies (hopefully not 146.52). It can be confusing.

We saw quite a few mountain goats which was awesome.

I always love explaining to people about SOTA on the summit when they ask what I am doing up there pointing my tape measure yagi around. :) Was able to introduce 2 people in my group to SOTA and showed them how it all works. One of them is taking their Tech exam Oct 5, so I am excited to have another friend with their license.

I did have something strange happen on Grays peak. I had my radio on both 146.52 and 147.42(main 14er freq) and I happened to hear a station on 147.42 and said he was in Pennsylvania. I was thinking to myself, "How is this possible on 2m?!" I attempted to call him and he could only make out some of my call sign. He said he was on a VOIP node I think. Has anyone else run into this? Is there a node here locally or was I reaching one further away I wonder?

Anyway these are my contacts from the day. Thanks everyone for the QSOs. Had a great time in nature and with friends.

Kris,
Best of luck with the activation.
Grays/Torreys is has a decent radio horizon to Denver and other populated areas, so that will help.
Be patient, sometimes it takes a while to get your four contacts on 2m fm.
