You can also just call 911 and tell them the route Caleb is doing. They will relay that info to the local sheriff office and SAR the covers that area.

Possibly experiencing heat exhaustion/out of water. Approx 30 minutes ago he was 4 miles from the end of the trial.  I have contacted the Dispatch for Rocky Mtn National park and they are trying to reach him. It would be a help to get his gps coordinates but I do not have those.

My hope is someone can reach him via radio or have details on the route he took so I can pass this information to dispatch/ranger. I knew he had big plans to talk to many of you today in this SOTA event.

"How was HF?"

I made 6 contacts on 30m CW. I wanted to play more HF but the clouds were building and I decided it was time to get off Mount Belford.

I tried 20m CW but there was a contest going on so I stuck with 30m.

I drove through Leadville last night and arrived at the
Missouri Gulch trailhead last night. I hiked from 8 to 930 pm and set up my hammock. Got a good start at 530 this morning.

I see a flurry of last minute database activity...we have 17 activations indicated with Saturday being the most popular day.
I also know of some activators that have not put anything out on the database, so it looks like we will have a good turnout!

Awesome!

Keep your head up when hiking, this juvenile fox paid me a visit when I was on the way up to activate Sneffels this morning.

Hoping to activate Wetterhorn tomorrow, and if time allows and the weather is like today’s I might try for Uncompahgre around midday as well.

Planning to make some of the drive on Saturday and activate one of the collegiates on my way back Sunday morning. Will try to update the db as appropriate after hitting send, but wrangling 3g here in Lake City.

Yep...I see that as well Bob.  It's good that most people plan on topping out by 9:30am.  That way you can probably be your summit for an hour or more before descending.  I plan on posting my SOTA alerts later today. Everybody should do that soon!

I'm packing up my truck this afternoon and leaving for the Mt Yale trailhead tomorrow.

Check the weather

As the weekend approaches, I've been checking the weather forecast for the summits we plan to activate in the Weston Pass/Buena Vista area.
It sure looks like the classic pattern of afternoon thundershowers all weekend, so plan according.

And keep them coming!

The use of 146.52 MHz during the 14er event

Bob K0NR

Back in the early days of the 14er event, we just called on 146.52 MHz when using the 2m band.
This quickly overloaded the channel which became a huge mess. In particular, mountaintop stations within range of the major cities worked lots of flat land stations but could not hear the mountaintop stations to the west. Our conclusion was that we had to spread out a bit on the band. We tried a number of different approaches and eventually settled in on using 147.42 MHz and higher frequencies for the event.

However, standard SOTA practice is to call on the calling frequency (146.52 MHz) because that's where people are listening.
This email is to encourage you to not clog 146.52 MHz. Instead, use 147.42 MHz and move up from there to 147.45, 147.48, 147.51 MHz as things get busy.
If you need to call on 146.52 to find activity, go ahead. One thing I do is call on 146.52 and announce that I am listening on 147.42 MHz, trying to pull people over there.
I guarantee you that if we all hang out on one frequency, it will be a mess.

The other VHF/UHF calling frequencies aren't usually that busy during the event, so go ahead and use them.

Make sure your VHF/UHF FM radio has the appropriate frequencies in memory before you hit the trail.
