Moving to Groups.io
Ham14er Group (Colorado 14er Event):
Yahoo groups continues to degrade so many ham radio groups are moving over to groups.io I'll be moving the ham14er group to groups.io. This should just automagically happen for you. The only thing you need to do is start sending ham14er messages to the groups.io email address. You will probably see a few messages from groups.io as the changes happen. The files and photos on Yahoo should be transferred over to groups.io I will leave the Yahoo group in place for a while as a backup. This is a quiet time of the year for us so it should be a good time to make the change. Any questions, let me know. 73 Bob -- Bob Witte / K0NR / @K0NR / www.k0nr.com

W0C SOTA Dinner Invitation - Mar 24th 6 PM Centennial, CO - RSVP required
Ham14er group,
This is going out to the Colorado 14er Event list. You are all invited to attend the informal Summits On The Air (SOTA) dinner in March. This is an informal event that we've done the past two years. It is a great chance to meet people that you've been talking to on the air. Also note that we have established a Colorado (W0C) SOTA group on "groups.io" for local SOTA discussions. https://groups.io/g/w0c-sota 73 Bob K0NR -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: [w0c-sota] W0C SOTA Dinner Invitation - Mar 24th 6 PM Centennial, CO - RSVP required Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2019 14:48:24 -0700 From: Bob K0NR <@K0NR> Reply-To: w0c-sota@groups.io To: w0c-sota@groups.io Announcing the 2019 W0C (Colorado) Summits On The Air Dinner *Sunday March 24, 2019^at 6 pm*** ** Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery <https://rockbottom.com/locations/south-denver/?utm_source=local&utm_medium=listings&utm_campaign=imm> 9627 E County Line Rd, Centennial, CO 80112 <https://www.bing.com/local?lid=YN873x16825757509627439841&id=YN873x16825757509627439841&q=Rock+Bottom+Restaurant+%26+Brewery&name=Rock+Bottom+Restaurant+%26+Brewery&cp=39.5677947998047%7e-104.873931884766&ppois=39.5677947998047_-104.873931884766_Rock+Bottom+Restaurant+%26+Brewery> · (303) 792-9090 See menu here: https://rockbottom.com/locations/centennial/ We will order off the regular menu and receive individual bills, plan on an 18% gratuity built-in due to the large group size. We have a large private room ("Buffalo Lounge") reserved that will easily handle our group with room to spare. This should be a really sweet venue for us, a nice upgrade over previous dinners. I need to provide a reasonably accurate headcount 4 days in advance of the event, so I will be tracking RSVPs carefully, so please help me out on that. Dinner details: We will go around the room and do introductions of everyone. Other than that, no agenda, no organization, just have fun, pay for your meal Please wear something with your name/callsign (name tag, shirt, cap, etc.) to aid in making connections (we've found that to be very helpful in past years) Feel free to bring small show-and-tell items (but keep it compact and lightweight...this is SOTA!) _Please forward this_ to anyone you know that might be interested. Everyone is welcome, including out-of-town visitors. _RSVP back to Bob K0NR_: @K0NR so we have an accurate count for the reservation. I'll be sending guest list updates to the w0c-sota group here: https://groups.io/g/w0c-sota 73 Bob K0NR -- Bob Witte / K0NR /@K0NR /www.k0nr.com

Jeff would scare the bejeebers out of me when we would go to Denver or when we would head off for the 14ers event. If someone was pulled over on the side of the road, he pulled over to help them. No matter what.

He was one of the sweetest, kindest men I have ever known. He was also one of the smartest men I have ever known. He could take garbage and create antennas. He could fix anything mechanical from vehicles to radios. I am honestly in shock. I didn’t know he was sick. Apparently he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer at the end of October. I am going to miss him. Dawna

Wish we had that pic for the service today Bob, the other ham is Ron, K0LMD from Wray, CO and he talked a bit about that Longs Peak trip today, others agreed with your "chatty" remarks :-) Jeff had only been diagnosed with cancer in November and it took him quickly, he was a good friend and its partly his fault I moved to Akron 2yrs ago, he will be sorely missed. 73, Dan N0TZL

I did not know that Jeff was ill. Jeff was involved in the early days of the Colorado 14er Event, serving on the Colorado 14er Event Task Force that manages the event. He's been active in the event and Summits On The Air activity in Colorado. Jeff (and Phil/N0KE) together hold the 2m all-mode distance record for the Colorado 14er Event. Operating from Mount Bross, they both worked W7XU and N0QJM near Parker, South Dakota on 2m CW at a distance of 551 miles. Attached is a photo of him and another ham doing a Longs Peak activation a few years back (with some serious antenna hardware). I'll always remember Jeff as being very friendly and chatty on the air, always willing to help out. Even to a fault....I recall thinking "come on Jeff, stop talking, I've got other stations waiting to make a contact." He will be missed by me and many others on the ham bands. 73 Bob K0NR Bob Witte / K0NR / @K0NR / www.k0nr.com

I haven’t been on Longs since doing a 14er event activation before SOTA came here. Took a buddipole and an 817. I will try to look for you.

Activating Longs Peak this weekend
ke0btx
Hello All, I just put in the alert on the SOTA site, just letting people know I will be attempting a SOTA activation of Longs Peak (W0C/FR-110 on 146.52-FM) this Sunday 9/16. Very tentative ETA is around 9 am, but I really don't know how long it will take with our group. I will send out a spot if I have cell phone service when on the summit and ready to go. Thanks, Kris KE0BTX

Do you think there’s a path to Akron from there. I can’t remember if the FT-90 is still in the Mini, or if I have a cigarette plug to power it. I haven’t gotten Powerpoles installed yet...

but if you might be up there past 11:30 and have a path, I will see if I can get the radio hooked up at lunch time. I will be at the airport full day today.

W0C-SP-076, unnamed peak activation 8/25
Barrett Poe
Folks, I am camping overnight this evening with some coworkers and I thought I might as well bag a peak while I'm in the area. I am opting for an unnamed peak just east of My Antero. I'll be packing my 2m/70cm HT with a half wave, and I'll bring the Yagi just in case. Barrett W0ASB

Finally got time to post a comment to the group. Our small band did summit Mt. Belford last Sunday. We hiked to treeline late Saturday and camped. Had several episodes of hail and rain thru the evening, making it quite miserable. Stars did peek out around 02:00 and that was fabulous to view. Sunday morning there was much thunder and sleet and we just about called it off, but it did appear to clear out some around 08:30 and quite a few locals were headed on up, so we followed. We did summit around 10:00. We made 5 contacts on 2 meters before losing my antenna to wind gust. Wind was fierce!! Gary W5ODS did make around 20 contacts on HF. We called it off at 11:00 and headed back down, thru several hail episodes and fierce wind gusts. This was by far the most challenging of any of the 14er's that we have done.

Re: 14er event last Sunday, Mt. Belford
Gary Burch
Hi Group, I see Jerry, KC5JKU, my fearless leader, just posted also
about our Mt. Belford adventure. The first rain event started just as we reached treeline Saturday afternoon. We quickly set up our tent and waited a few minutes for it to subside. Jerry proceeded to get a campfire going and I thought, "OK, that was our 10% rain forecast, now for the stars and a pleasant evening." As Jerry said, the star report at 2am was encouraging only to be dampened by the sound of rain on our tent at 4am. My son Dan, N9JHZ, joined me on my and his first 14er hike. Starting the hike we discovered the weather pattern was dark clouds, rain, sleet, hail, clear skies and then repeat. We made it to the top and I made 2 contacts on 2 meters with KX0R and KI6ASW with my FT-60 and a rubber duck antenna. I then jumped down to HF to work some SOTA chasers on 40, 30 and 20 meters. At the Summit it was clear but the wind was strong and cold so my CW was getting worse as time went on. I was able to make 37 SOTA contacts before we decided to pack it up and head down. I was quickly reminded that "down" could be more difficult than "up", so began the slow (like turtle slow) descent for me. We were all happy to have achieved the 14er Summit and had a great weekend together. 73 Gary W5ODS
