K0NR and K0JJW 2017 Colorado 14er Event

Joyce K0JJW and I had a wonderful time playing radios on the 14er event weekend.
On Saturday, we got up at Oh Dark Thirty to get to the Huron Peak trailhead by 6 am.
As many people have pointed out, Huron Peak is considered one of the most attractive 14er hikes.
We made the summit by 10 AM and started operating. We operated 2m fm and 70 cm fm using handheld radios with 1/2-wave vertical antennas. I actually carried a pair of yagi antennas along but never got around to deploying them. Weather was mostly cloudy but it never really threatened rain.

The special treat for the day was working Carey KX0R on 2m fm. Carey is the leading SOTA goat in Colorado and a passionate CW operator, so it was a treat to hear him on phone. Actually, I joked that it must be a pirate station because KX0R doesn't work 2m fm. Joyce worked him along with his hiking partner John N0TA.

On Sunday, we hiked up to Mount Evans from Summit Lake. The elevation gain is about 1400 feet so it wasn't a killer hike but we were definitely tired from Saturday.
The problem with Evans is that you get to share the summit with hundreds of tourists that have driven up the highway to enjoy the mountain. Oh well.
This time, I did deploy the 2m and 70 cm yagi antennas to provide a bit more signal. Some of the tourists wandering by speculated that we were tracking bears. We didn't correct them. (If they really asked, we told them we were using ham radio to talk to other summits, which they usually thought was pretty cool.)

The treat for Sunday was working Steve WG0AT on Mount Herman for my 50th QSO with Mt Herman. Steve offers the Rooster Goat 50 Memorial Award for anyone that makes 50 contacts with our favorite "backyard" summit. I had been watching my QSO count and knew that it hit 49 late last year. Of course it was a special treat to work Steve for #50, S2S from Mount Evans. Then I worked Guy NS0TA (N7UN) for #51. We descended Mount Evans via the Mount Spaulding route, which made for a nice loop hike from Summit Lake.
The weather was mostly cloudy and the clouds moved in low around the summit for a while. No rain though.

Greetings, all! I did a long (for me) and rewarding hike in the Never Summer Wilderness Saturday and a shorter easier hike Sunday.  I hiked Cascade Mountain (W0C/FR-059, 12300 ft) Saturday and Poison Ridge (W0C/FR-087, 11417 ft) Sunday, both in north central Colorado. I got a late start both both days, which limited the number of Colorado contacts I made. Setting up for HF Saturday, there was the sound of static on my rig when I first turned it on that I attributed to the dark cloud overhead. I was prepared to break things back down and get off the summit quickly, but fortunately the static went away after less than a minute and I was able to spend three hours with fairly nice weather. It was good to make contact with Jeff, N0XDQ, both days. Post-event, I'm thinking of ways for more contacts on more bands next year, and maybe even making it up a 14er.

73,
Peter
